IOC Executive Board Meeting and Various Developments in the Olympic Realm

On April 9, 2025, IOC President Thomas Bach and President - elect Kirsty Coventry chaired a hybrid - format meeting of the IOC Executive Board (EB) at the Olympic House. IOC Vice - President Pierre - Olivier Beckers - Vieujant and Executive Board member Nenad Lalovic attended the meeting in person.

The Executive Board heard the latest updates from the Olympic Program Commission, the Coordination Committees, and the organizing committees of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2030 France Alps Olympics. The IOC Executive Board (EB) approved the competition program and athlete quotas for LA28. The total number of medal events in LA28 is 351, 22 more than the 329 in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The core athlete quota remains at 10,500, and an additional 698 quotas have been allocated for the five sports proposed by the LA28 organizing committee: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash. For the first time ever, the number of female teams in all team sports is at least equal to that of male teams, with two additional women's water polo teams added.

 

During the meeting, the IOC Executive Board also approved the IOC's co - signature of the host contract for the 2030 France Alps Olympics. This is an important milestone, marking the official start of work and participation of the newly - established organizing committee.

The IOC President welcomed a delegation led by Seung Min Ryu, the recently elected President of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee and an Olympic champion, to the Olympic House. Ryu Seung - min was accompanied by Gyeongbuk Governor Kwan Young Kim and Soo Hyun Myung, Director of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea. The meeting discussed South Korea's interest in hosting a future edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Subsequently, a comprehensive presentation on the project was given to Kolinda Grabar - Kitarović, President of the IOC Future Host Commission for the Olympic Games, and members of the Olympic Games Department.

 

At the Olympic House, President Bach also met with IOC members Ser Miang Ng and Cecilia Tait Villacorta and IOC Honorary Member Uğur Erdener. They discussed a wide range of Olympic topics, including upcoming Olympics and Youth Olympics.

President Bach delivered a speech at the "2025 EU Sport Forum" held in Krakow, Poland, emphasizing the importance of the European sports model. President Bach also reviewed the successful hosting of the 2024 Paris Olympics via live video and looked ahead to the upcoming 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. He also recalled the importance of protecting the neutrality of the Olympics. "Only by fundamentally committing to political neutrality and universality can we make the Olympics a symbol of global unity and peace. In our world torn by hatred, war, and division, the Olympics is the only event that can bring the whole world together in peaceful competition." EU Sport Commissioner Glenn Micallef also commended the leadership of the IOC President. He said, "Thank you for your contributions to sports and for leading sports during difficult times. The COVID period also tested you greatly during your tenure as President, but you led sports with integrity, based on our shared values." The EU Sport Forum is an annual two - day forum that brings together hundreds of high - level figures from EU member states and sports organizations to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and future of sports in the EU.
